Duplex Ultrasound
This procedure combines conventional imaging with Doppler flow information for a dual approach that allows doctors to see the structure of the blood vessels. We can see how the blood is flowing through the veins and actually measure the speed of the flow. The Duplex Ultrasound can also be useful in estimating the diameter of a blood vessel as well as pin-pointing obstructions (if any).
With conventional ultrasounds, sound waves bounce off of veins and these waves are converted into two-dimensional, B-mode, black and white moving pictures. Since the sound waves are so high, the human ear can’t detect them, which makes this procedure entirely painless.
Now Doppler Ultrasound works differently. Rather than bouncing the sound waves off of blood vessels, this procedure bounces them off of moving objects, like red blood cells. We still receive a 2-D result, but the Doppler Ultrasound produces it in color. This type of ultrasound is helpful in determining blood flow problems affected by issues in the veins, such as cholesterol deposits.
So the Duplex ultrasound combines the technology of both types of ultrasounds for a comprehensive vascular diagnosis. We can see the speed and direction of your blood flow as well as whether or not you have any blockage issues. Most importantly, we can determine if there are any severe conditions.
How long does a Duplex Ultrasound take?
